About the Sonny Melton Scholarship Fund

Sonny Melton, 29, was a Big Sandy native and a graduate of Union University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. He was a registered nurse at Henry County Medical Center in Paris, TN.

On the night of October 1, 2017, Sonny and his wife, Dr. Heather Gulish Melton, attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas where the tragic events unfolded. Sonny gave his life protecting his wife and was the first identified victim of the Las Vegas tragedy. The primary focus of this fund is to recognize the heroism of Sonny Melton, and preserve the memory of his lifetime commitment to the service of others.

The hope is that youth looking to pursue a career in healthcare in the Big Sandy community will emulate Sonny’s example of applying his education and talent to providing care in the under served region of rural West Tennessee.  It is our goal to expand opportunities in Sonny’s hometown while encouraging others to follow his lead and pursue a career in nursing.

To honor Sonny’s life and professional work, we invite you to join us in contributing to Sonny’s fund. Let Sonny’s life inspire Big Sandy’s youth.
